Russell Caplan webRussell Caplan was appointed Chairman of ConnectEast and Horizon Roads from 1 July 2017. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Melbourne and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management.

Russell is a highly experienced non-executive director with extensive international experience in the oil & gas and mining industries.

In a 42 year career with Shell, he held senior roles in the upstream and downstream operations and corporate functions in Australia and overseas. From 1997 to 2006 he had senior international postings in the UK, Europe and the USA.

From 2006 to July 2010 he was Chairman of the Shell Group of Companies in Australia.

Russell is a Non-Executive Director of Aurizon Limited and Chairman of the Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust. Russell is a former Chairman of ASX-listed Orica Limited and the Australian Institute of Petroleum. He is also former Non-Executive Director of Woodside Petroleum Limited.

Russell has significant exposure to regulated infrastructure industries. He has a deep understanding of large-scale infrastructure projects and a familiarity with technology applicable to these assets.

charles griplasCharles Griplas joined ConnectEast as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director in August 2014. Before his role at ConnectEast, Charles was Chief Executive Officer of TT-Line Company Pty Ltd, the company that operates the Spirit of Tasmania vessels between mainland Australia and Tasmania. He was appointed as CEO of TT-Line in 2008, joining the company from Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics Oceania.

Charles has a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) from the University of NSW, and an Executive MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management.

Gavin Merchant webGavin Merchant joined USS in 2011 as Senior Investment Manager with responsibility for sourcing, evaluating and monitoring co-investments within the infrastructure portfolio.  Gavin reports to Mike Powell, Head of Alternative Assets and is a voting member of the Alternatives Investment Committee.  Gavin has worked in the infrastructure sector in the UK and Australia for fifteen years.

Prior to joining USS, Gavin was a Director at Equitix Limited.  Earlier in his career, Gavin was an Investment Director of ING’s European infrastructure fund having previously been a founder member of Merrill Lynch’s global infrastructure investments business.  Gavin also spent five years as a member of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s infrastructure and privatisation team. Gavin graduated with an honours degree in Law from the University of Edinburgh.  He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.

APG Asset Management

Aerts webHans-Martin Aerts is the Head of Infrastructure Asia at APG Asset Management. APG Asset Management is specialized in managing pension capital, offering asset management services to the pension funds of the government, education and construction sectors and housing corporations in the Netherlands.

Based in the Hong Kong office, he is responsible for managing the infrastructure investments in Asia-Pacific.

Prior to working for APG, Hans-Martin was a Senior Portfolio Manager at ABP. He joined ABP in 2001 and has since worked in various areas, including infrastructure, structured finance and global equities. Hans-Martin is a CFA charter holder, and holds an MSc in Economics from the Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Nancy Zhu webNancy Zhu was Head of Investment Analysis at CP2 when Horizon Roads acquired ConnectEast in 2011. She resigned from CP2 in February 2015.

Nancy gained management and operational expertise with Sydney Airport where she worked for more than seven years. Nancy held senior management positions including Manager of Strategy and Finance, Trading Policy Manager and Transport Business Manager. She was directly involved in the trade sale of Sydney Airport in 2002 and the $500 million Sydney Airport redevelopment program.

Nancy was previously the Director and Head of Retail Services for CB Richard Ellis in Shanghai, a key property sector organisation and held responsibility across Greater China.  

Niels Jensen, Senior Portfolio Manager in the Investment team at ATP, has been appointed as alternate director for Nancy Zhu.

NPS National Pension Service

Richard Gwangbum KohRichard Gwangbum Koh is the Head of Global Infrastructure at NPS of the Republic of Korea. From 2008 to 2016, Richard was a senior vice president at the Global/Domestic Private Equity group at NPS. Prior to NPS, he was a senior analyst at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Richard holds a BA from the Seoul National University and a Master’s Degree in Finance from the London Business School.

Kuk Khim, Global Infrastructure Investment Manager at NPS, has been appointed as alternate director for Richard Gwangbum Koh.

USS Universities Superannuation Scheme

Rob HorsnallRob Horsnall is a Senior Investment Manager at USS, where he is responsible for origination and execution of private market transactions.  

He has led a number of equity transactions for USS including the 100% acquisition of Moto Hospitality, minority acquisition of Heathrow Airport and NATS, and the acquisition of Globalvia, a global toll road operator. Rob sits on a number of portfolio company boards for USS, including ConnectEast and Globalvia.

Rob holds a BA in history from the University of Liverpool and qualified as an ACA qualified accountant at Shipleys LLP.

Mike Powell, Head of Alternative Assets at USS, has been appointed as alternate director for Rob Horsnall.

CIC China Investment Corporation

Yan WangYan Wang has been Head of the Infrastructure (Europe/Asia) group at CIC since March 2014. Previously, Yan was Head of CIC’s strategic fund group.

Prior to joining CIC, Yan worked for 8 years at Bank of China in its Commercial Banking and M&A divisions.

Yan is also non-executive director of Thames Water Utilities Ltd. She holds a Ph.D in Finance.
